Print editorial sample. Published in Bicycling magazine, December 2003. "Farther Than the Eye Can See" Pepperdine University junior Brian Bushway can rock a downhill and jump curbs with the best of them, but he can't drive a car or identify colors. At the age of 14, optic nerve atrophy left Bushway completely blind, and he relinquished his bike for books on tape. Enter Dan Kish, founder of World Access for the Blind and an expert in echolocation. This navigational technique, also used by bats, lets people perceive objects via the reflection of sound waves. Blind since birth, Kish taught Bushway to recognize everything from a piece of Plexiglas to a playing card. A few months later, Kish and Bushway helped form Team Bat, a mountain biking group for the visually impaired. Today, Bushway and his teammates use echolocation to navigate trails as well as dirt roads. Zip-ties on their wheels make the bikes louder; sighted riders lead and follow the group. One of the more technically savvy Bats, Bushway hopes to enter mainstream races. Says Bushway: "This isn't amazing or impossible."he "Daily News" is updated Monday-Friday and includes the latest newsming scene, interviews, and websites related to running |
